What a stare! A red fox mother stops to give me a once over near Toolik Lake in Northern Alaska.

Against the Grain

Marbled Godwits (and a few Willets) really pack in while roosting during high-tide. This photo was taken at the boardwalk at Arrowhead Marsh at Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline near the Oakland, CA airport. Although many parts of the San Francisco Bay are quite developed, the region supports a huge amount of wildlife including many shorebirds like these.

Close Encounter

A young Red-tailed Hawk drifts overhead. San Pablo Ridge in Wildcat Canyon is a great place to find raptors, especially in the fall, when many take advantage of the sun and wind to hunt rodents on the grassy hills below.

Sunny Side of the Street

A coyote trots across the Wildcat Creek Trail in Wildcat Canyon. I was hoping it would cross in front of the bright fall leaves and it obliged!

Fog Forest Fungus

Amanita muscaria flourish in the damp pine forest in Wildcat Canyon. This species of mushroom, one of the 'death caps', is as beautiful as it is deadly. This photo has been a surprise hit with my cards, and is routinely a favorite when I sell at festivals.

Yellow-crowned Night Heron

A Yellow-crowned Night Heron perches in the Oxley Nature Center near Tulsa, Oklahoma. With the summer clouds and loose canopy of the forest creating sumptuous diffuse light, this gorgeous bird almost looks like he or she is getting a studio portrait. Taken in 2018.

Which way to the Cow Palace?

Wildcat Canyon is a multi-use unit of the East Bay Regional Park District. Among the hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, dog walkers there are, yes , cows roaming the western slopes of San Pablo Ridge. This cow happened to line up perfectly with a shot across the bay towards San Francisco.

Monument Draw Supermoon

One of my all-time favorite photos! In the endless miles of open sage near Lander, Wyoming, there is a draw with "mushroom" rocks that's a locals' spot for a picnic with a view west to the Wind River Range. I was part of a research team working in this area, and one night the stars finally aligned that I could get down there in the dark to set up for a "super moon" (a moonset when the moon is closer than typical). After trying some night photography around the rock formations, I headed back up the draw to wait for dawn. So amazing to hear coyotes and meadowlarks echoing up and down the canyon while the moon magically touched down on the snowcapped peaks.
